The Products:
We’re excited about the last Greenish Box of 2021. It’s been a great year, and we appreciate all of you enjoying this little sustainability journey with us. Thanks for everything, and enjoy the items we’ve put together for you.
Collapsible Reusable Cup from Hydaway (myhydaway.com)
Doesn’t it bother you when you forget your reusable cup when you’re out in the world? Well, these cups from Hydaway replace single use takeaway cups and are legitimately good for being on the go. They’re ideal for travel, fit easily into backpacks, and they’re great for everyday use. Hurley, of course, loves to keep his in his cycling kit, and wants you to know about it.
HOT TAKE: Sometimes half the battle when it comes to reducing waste is having something pretty in your hand that works well and that you enjoy. These cups look terrific, and they’re kinda fun to use, pack, and use again. We know they’re not made in Canada, but we did purchase them from a Canadian distributor whose intentions to help reduce waste are the same as ours.
We’re Greenish, not Greenperfect.
Coffee Sack Scrubber from All Things Preserved (allthingspreserved.ca)
You probably remember All Things Preserved from the January 2021 Greenish Box, and since Susan is so awesome, we wanted to include another item that we use so regularly in our own kitchens. These all-purpose scrubbers are made from upcycled fabric and coffee bags from Smile Tiger Roasters in Kitchener. Hurley especially loves using this one, and uses it for all types of pots, pans, and other dishes in his kitchen.
HOT TAKE: We love coffee so much that when we first found out about these, we had to try them. When we found out they were actually super effective, we pretended like we were smarter than we actually are. This is an amazing way to reuse coffee bags, other than the sweet tablecloths we’ve made from them for our popup and market events.
Lip Balm from The Cedar Nook (thecedarnook.com)
We met Sarah when she was doing a pop up market at the Muskoka Shipyards in Gravenhurst, and wanted to make sure we featured one of her items in a Greenish Box. This lip balm is perfect as we’re getting into the fall/winter season, is made in Canada, of course, and features sustainable, plastic-free packaging.
HOT TAKE: It’s easy to package natural items in non-recyclable, non-reusable packaging, but we like what Sarah is doing across the board with her product line - compostable paperboard like with this lip butter, glass bottles and jars, reusable tins… and the contents are great too, you’re going to love The Cedar Nook.
Holiday Ornament from Muskoka Repurposed (instagram.com/muskokarepurposed)
These ornaments are produced locally in Bracebridge, and we are very happy to be including something that might bring a little sustainability to your holiday cheer this year, in our last subscription box before the holiday season. The majority of the pieces in these ornaments are repurposed, and have been in homes for decades, but can now have a new use for decades to come.
HOT TAKE: This new business has been started up by Adam’s sister Emily, and we’re very excited to be able to support her venture as she gets it off the ground. Check our website later this week for some more Muskoka Repurposed items being added, and keep an eye out at the Muskoka Shipyards, too. Also, never forget how much fun it is to thrift and be creative about new uses for old items. Don’t limit yourself, think outside the box and enjoy the process.
Soap from Anointment Natural Skin Care (anointment.ca)
We wanted to feature some soap in this Greenish Box, and when we found Anointment the fit seemed perfect. Anointment soaps are manufactured by hand in New Brunswick, where Hurley’s family is from originally. They use natural ingredients, an ethical process including being aware of every ingredient they use, and their packaging is sustainable.
HOT TAKE: We know that not every item in every Greenish Box is going to work for everyone, so we try to source some items that work either for your own personal use, or as gifts. These soaps, for example, are perfect for the upcoming holiday season, or you can try the four different soap varieties that come in this package and use them around your home.
Medium Snack Bags from Colibri (colibricanada.com)
Colibri is a made in Canada success story. They’re based in Winnipeg and have become a household name for families with young kids everywhere. They are of course amazing for snacks, but there are so many uses for these bags. This new medium size, to us, is perfect, and we thought it would be a great addition to your reduced-waste home.
HOT TAKE: These are machine washable, but you’re supposed to hang them to dry… which, of course, we do recommend. We’ve been using these for a while though, and sometimes during the course of life, they sneak their way into the dryer… and they still work great after. It’s nice to have items that can withstand imperfect owners (all of us).
Supporting Female-Owned Businesses:
At Greenish, we’re proud to be supporting female-owned businesses - 5/6 of the above businesses are female-owned, and the sixth was purchased from a female-owned distributor. As a couple of males, it’s important for us to make a conscious effort to ensure we’re supporting the growth and development of sustainable communities as part of our business model as well as our own personal growth.
A couple notes on packaging:
We use recyclable boxes, unbranded so that you can reuse them as well if you choose. We’ll also take them back from you if that’s logistically doable and use them for a future delivery. As for the rest of it, we’ve made our own packing strips by shredding the heck out of paper and paper bags that we’ve collected, we’ve used a form of paper tape which is a bit better than plastic tape, and our labels are made from recycled paper. Also, the paperwork included in each box is printed on paper recovered from a local business that was destined for the Blue Box.
